A West Ashley man is facing a cruelty to animals charge after deputies say he admits to pouring anti-freeze into his neighbor's yard to kill their dog.

Mary Sutton says the neighborhood and street she lives on, Avalon Circle, is a nice, quiet part of West Ashley. "It's really pet friendly. Everybody's always walking their dogs... there's more pets than kids."

That's why the crime her neighbor is accused of is so hard to imagine. "It was a pretty little dog. You know, nobody should do nothing like that to a pet."

Investigators say Thomas Ryan Walker intentionally killed his neighbor's dog. On Sunday, Walker's neighbor, Johnny Payne, noticed his 16 month old yellow lab puppy was throwing up and acting strange. He took the dog to the vet, and Monday morning, the vet told him the dog's kidneys were failing, most likely due to antifreeze poison. The dog had to be put to sleep.

When he got home, Payne found what looked like antifreeze next to the fence he shares with Walker in his back yard.

When confronted by a Sheriff's deputy, Walker confessed verbally, in writing and on video to poisoning the dog on purpose so he would not have to hear the barking.

"That's very cruel. Somebody that could hurt a pet like that could hurt a child." Sutton says she feels horrible for what the Payne family is going through. "You know, they are just like little people... Little children. They can't do nothing for themselves. We have to do it. It's sad."

Walker was given a $25,000 surety bond by a judge today in bond court. He later bonded out of jail.

If convicted, he faces 6 months
to 5 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
