According to Wednesday'sBaltimore Sun, the Baltimore, Maryland, police officer who held down a dog while another officer slit her throat, has been cleared of wrong-doing.
As of January 8, the slate of Officer Thomas Schmidt was wiped clean for his part in the death of Nala, a Chinese Shar-pei, who had escaped from her home last summer. Schmidt was facing multiple charges of animal cruelty for allegedly holding Nala down while Officer Jeffrey Bolger cut her throat.
Schmidt's attorney Paula Xinis stated:
"Officer Schmidt followed police protocol, and we're very satisfied with the state's review of the case,"
Schmidt's attorneys stated that their client held Nala with a catch pole until animal control could respond. Attorneys defending Officer Bolger have claimed that Nala strangled herself while in the grip of the pole - they contend that Officer Bolger was only trying to "end her suffering" by cutting her throat.
In a prior Baltimore Sun publication, Officer Bolger stated that he had killed the dog because he was worried that she might have rabies and a good Samaritan, who was pregnant, had received a minor bite from the dog while trying to help capture her.
Bolger, the man who actually cut Nala's throat, has not yet stood trial - he is expected to be in court in March.
